Q: As both a creator and a curator, how do these roles relate and influence each other? When selecting new artists for exhibitions, what aspects do you focus on, and which qualities of the artists do you pay more attention to?
I believe the roles of creator and curator are mutually supportive. I began my career creating comics, which later led to curatorial work. This background helps me understand artists’ needs better, allowing me to organize both the overall theme and individual pieces more effectively.
When curating, I don’t just look at how excellent an artist’s work is. There are so many outstanding artists, including many talented newcomers. However, a successful exhibition needs a coherent theme and style, so I focus on finding artists who fit the exhibition’s concept.
Q: For illustrators looking to develop in the commercial sector, what other skills and prospects are essential besides illustration skills? How do you optimize and select different projects and collaborations?
Having started in advertising, I believe that besides illustration skills, the ability to interpret client briefs is crucial. In commercial collaborations, you must balance your style with client needs, so understanding the product’s style or the brand’s tone is vital.
When it comes to different projects, many specific factors come into play. It’s not just about my “optimization and selection” but also about collaborating closely with clients. We need to see if my creative approach can convey the project’s intended message before deciding on the partnership.
