Artwork Description
This artwork is adapted from the long narrative poem “Pipa Xing” by the Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi. It tells the story of Bai Juyi meeting a skilled pipa performer during his exile in Jiangzhou. Moved by her exquisite pipa skills and her tragic life story, which resonated with his own, he felt deep empathy, leading to the famous line, “The Subprefect of Jiangzhou, whose blue garment was soaked in tears.”
